Wedding

Imagine exchanging vows in a space filled with light, artistry, and breathtaking architecture. The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa offers a wedding venue like no other, combining cultural significance, iconic design, and a creative ambiance that will leave your guests in awe. Whether you envision an intimate ceremony or a grand celebration, this venue provides a perfect blend of elegance and originality. As a wedding photographer in Ottawa, is it one of my favourite places to photograph a wedding day.

A very interesting thing about this building is that it was designed by a world renowned architect – and we are so fortunate to have such a stunning landmark right here in Ottawa. You might know about the famous Jewel Changi airport in Singapore with the waterfall – or the famous Marina Bay Sands?

I love to learn about the history of places and buildings and learn the intention behind the design process and decisions made.

With every venue there are different priorities that couples will consider and I find it is always best to begin the venue search with an experienced planner who can help you narrow down the options based on your ultimate wedding day goals. At the end of this post I have shared my recommended planners.

Wedding Photography Guidelines for the National Gallery in Ottawa

The Gallery permits professional photography and photoshoots for weddings and engagements, family photographs, and professional headshots as long as the following guidelines are respected:

  • Professional photography is not permitted in exhibition spaces at the Gallery.
  • Professional photography is only permitted in public spaces.
  • Your group must not exceed 15 people, which includes photographers and any other supporting people.
  • Photographs may only be taken with handheld cameras and minimal equipment. Off-camera flash, large equipment bags, tripods, selfie sticks and reflectors are not permitted.
  • Photography must not impede visitor flow, impact visitors or interfere with other activities taking place.
  • Photography groups are not permitted to move furniture, signage or similar items in public spaces. Decor or other items must not be brought into the Gallery for your photoshoot.
  • Any photographs taken at the Gallery should be for personal use only.
  • Photography groups must follow the NGC Visitor Code of Conduct, and all instructions provided by Gallery staff.

Until March 31, 2025, there are no fees for taking photographs at the National Gallery of Canada. Please note, starting April 1, 2025, the Gallery will be charging a flat fee of $100 for professional photography taking place inside the National Gallery of Canada.

A Note on Photography at the National Gallery

As with any public space that is made available for photography, it is a courtesy that is extended by the space. A paid permit ensures that guests are respecting the property and the guidelines around the photography.

Please remember to respect the space when you are using it, respect the guidelines and ensure this beautiful courtesy remains an option for everyone in the future. With some sadness, there have been venues that have had to ban the use of their space (even with a paid permit) due to lack of adherence to guidelines. Please respect the properties always.

Event Timing

Events typically begin one hour after public hours. Partial set-up may be allowed earlier, subject to approval.

Restrictions

The National Gallery is primarily an art institution, so artwork in event spaces may not align with your style and is subject to change without notice.  These unique elements are part of the venue’s charm, but it’s important to note that restrictions, including bans on open flames, fog, and similar effects, are in place to protect the art and are non-negotiable.
