Some weddings feel like a whirlwind. Others, like Andrea and Luke’s, feel anchored — calm, focused, and filled with meaning.
Their day wasn’t about putting on a show. It was about being present. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that every decision was made with intention — not just for the couple, but for their families and loved ones, who were at the heart of this celebration.
Held at the iconic Fairmont Château Laurier in downtown Ottawa, their wedding combined the elegance of a heritage venue with the intimacy of a smaller guest list. With just 45 guests, the day unfolded at a gentle pace — allowing everyone to truly experience it, not just witness it.
A Calm, Family-Centered Start to the Day
Andrea got ready with her mom, her sisters, and her nieces in a softly lit suite at the Château. Those quiet moments before the ceremony were some of my favourites to photograph. There’s something special about the energy of a room when a bride is surrounded by the women who’ve shaped her life. No chaos, no rushing, just genuine connection and anticipation.
Meanwhile, Luke prepared for the day with his 11-year-old son. Watching them get ready together added an emotional layer to the story; a reminder that weddings are not only about two people coming together, but about honouring the relationships that came before.
From the Tudor Room to the Quebec Suite: A Seamless Celebration
The Tudor Room, with its detailed architecture and warm light, was the perfect setting for their ceremony. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room, and as a photographer, moments like that are what I’m always looking for. Not staged, not scripted.
After the ceremony, guests made their way to the Quebec Suite for a relaxed dinner reception. Elise from Toast Events did an incredible job bringing their vision to life. The décor was classic and romantic, with a timeless palette and thoughtful details throughout the space. It felt elevated without being overdone.
A Heirloom Sword and a Powerful Nod to Legacy
One of the most memorable moments was when Andrea and Luke used a family heirloom sword to cut their wedding cake. The sword has been in the family for generations, a symbol of heritage and connection that added a powerful touch of meaning to the day. Even if not everyone knew the full story behind it, the presence of something passed down held weight. That’s what I love most about weddings like this: they make space for legacy.
The Beauty of an Intimate Wedding at Château Laurier
Ottawa has no shortage of beautiful wedding venues, but the Château Laurier remains one of the most iconic — and for good reason. It offers the kind of setting where couples don’t have to choose between elegance and warmth. The architecture speaks for itself, but what makes it special is how it allows couples to shape the day to reflect who they are. For Andrea and Luke, that meant keeping things small, focusing on their people, and celebrating without stress.
As a wedding photographer based in Ottawa, I’ve documented many kinds of celebrations — but it’s the intimate ones that often leave the biggest impression. When the noise fades, what’s left are the connections. And this wedding was full of them.
