Getting Married at the NAC in Ottawa: The Photographer’s Guide to an Iconic Venue

If you’re dreaming of a wedding that’s chic, sophisticated, and rooted in the heart of Ottawa—the venue to look at is the National Arts Centre (NAC). With its striking architecture, killer downtown views, and some of the best lighting in the city, the NAC is truly in a league of its own.

I’ve photographed weddings here, and every time I shoot at the NAC, I fall in love all over again. This place just gets it: modern romance, elegance, energy, and vibes for days.

Why Couples Love the NAC

There are a lot of reasons this venue is a top-tier pick, but let’s start with the obvious: location, location, location. The NAC is steps away from Ottawa’s best hotels, restaurants, Parliament Hill, and the canal. Whether your guests are local or flying in, it’s ridiculously convenient. Bonus? You’re surrounded by photo-ready spots that make sneaking away for portraits a breeze.

Plus, it’s cool. The renovated space was designed by the same architect behind Toronto’s National Ballet building—which is why it feels equal parts refined, romantic, and modern.

One of the reasons I love photographing weddings at the NAC is the light. Floor-to-ceiling windows and architectural details bring in that dreamy natural glow that photographers obsess over. Whether you’re saying “I do” in front of the glass panels of the Lantern Room or stealing a quiet moment on the terrace, the photos are effortlessly stunning.

Here are a few of my favourite spots to shoot at the NAC:

  • The Red Steps – Statement portraits live here.
  • The Terrace Overlooking Downtown – Especially beautiful at sunset or blue hour.
  • The Spring Bloom Trees at the Box Office Entrance – A total hidden gem in late April/early May.
  • Inside the Venue Spaces – Clean lines, elegant textures, and floor-to-ceiling windows? Yes, please.

NAC Ceremony & Reception Spaces

The Lantern Room

Bright, dramatic, and airy with soaring ceilings. Just note that the exterior glass screens are usually lit with a projection—which they do turn off for your ceremony, but only if you’re running on time. If you start late, you might start to see some unexpected light filtering in. So… plan for precision, or at least build in a buffer.

Rossy Pavilion

It’s a more intimate space with a gorgeous view of the War Memorial. The downside? The ceiling rigging. Some couples love it, others not so much. It’s worth seeing in person to decide how it feels for your vision.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Booking

Multiple Entrances

Navigating the NAC can be an adventure depending on what’s on that evening. Make sure to have clear signage to direct your guests to where they need to go – you can even go as far as creating a map for them to follow (adding to the guest experience!). This is also where your planner and their team can take the reigns and ensure they have someone to greet the guests and direct them.

Staffing Support is Limited Early in the Day

Unlike some venues that offer full-day coordination, the NAC doesn’t provide a venue coordinator to help with setup or ceremony flow. A banquet manager joins once cocktail hour kicks off, but before that? It’s on you and your team. This is where a wedding planner becomes an MVP, keeping your timeline (and sanity) on track. At the end of this article I share a list of planners I recommend for planning at the NAC.

Accommodations Are Offsite

The NAC includes a stay at the Lord Elgin Hotel for newlyweds, but there’s no onsite accommodation.

Guest Experience: What Works

Once guests are inside, the NAC really shines. The underground parking makes things easy, the bar service is excellent, and the food? Chefs kiss. Their in-house culinary team is consistently impressive. Your guests will be well-fed, well-danced, and totally wowed.

And can we talk about the vibe again? This space feels elevated without being stuffy—ideal for couples who want to bring the energy but keep it stylish.

Is the NAC Your Wedding Venue?

If you want a venue that mixes architectural edge with romance, has incredible light, and sits at the very heart of Ottawa—you really can’t go wrong with the NAC. It’s central, sleek, and makes an impression the second you walk in.

And if you want wedding photos that feel just as iconic as the venue? I’d love to be there with you. Let’s make art together in one of Ottawa’s most photogenic places.
